A convenient and inexpensive way of travelling from Mumbai to Goa is by train. It's much more comfortable,fun and faster than the bus. If you take an overnight train, you'll be there the next morning. Most trains take around 12 hours. Here's what you need to know about trains from Mumbai to Goa.

The main railway station in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) near the Fort area of south Mumbai. Its code is CST.
Trains to Goa also depart Mumbai from Lokmanyatilak Terminus, which is in Kurla.


The prime railway station in Goa is Madgaon, also known as Margao . It's located in south Goa. If you're traveling to the north Goa beaches, try to get a train that stops at Thivim (THVM).

Mumbai Goa Trains
The most famous train which many prefer from Mumbai to Goa is the 0111 Konkankanya Express. It departs Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus at 11.05 p.m. and arrives at Madgaon at 10.45 a.m. It also stops at Pernem and Thivim in north Goa. The fare in 1AC (first class, air conditioned, sleeper) is approx 1,800 rupees it also depends on seasons . 2A (two tier, air conditioned, sleeper) is 1,100 rupees. 3A (three tier, air conditioned, sleeper) is 783 rupees. SL (three tier, non air conditioned, sleeper) is 300 rupees. The train runs every day and also is very cheap

If you don't mind an early start, the 2051 Jan Shatabdi Express from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Madgaon is another decent choice. It's a "people's" Shatabdi train though, so don't expect the normal Shatabdi train perks. It departs at 5.10 a.m. and arrives in Madgaon at 2.10 p.m. The train also stops at Thivim in north Goa. The fare in CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is 680 rupees. 2S (second class, seated, non air conditioned) is 197 rupees. The train runs every day.
Another more time consuming option, which requires a day of travel, is the 0103 Mandovi Express. It departs Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus at 6.55 a.m. and arrives at Madgaon at 6.45 p.m. It also stops at Pernem and Thivim in north Goa. The fares are the same as for the Konkankanya Express, and this train also runs every day.
Note About Travel During the Monsoon Season
A monsoon timetable operates from mid June until the end of October each year. Many trains depart earlier than usual to account for delays as a result of reduced travel speed for safety reasons.

Languages in Goa

Goa boasts about a lot of languages. Portuguese was widely spoken until Goa was liberated from the Portugal regime in 1961. The older generations can still speak Portuguese. However, the main languages spoken now in Goa are Konkani and Marathi. Marathi is widely taught in schools too.


Mostly everyone in Goa can speak in English and Hindi as now it is becoming a place where there are tourist and this is a universal language. there are people of various regions, races and religions from India and abroad settling in Goa, their language too has pitched accrodingly. The various languages which people interact in Goa are English, Portuguese, Konkani, Hindi and Marathi. Konkani, however, is the official language of Goa. Konkani is written in the Devanagri script. The other main languages spoken in the state are Marathi, Kannad and Urdu. Gujarati and Hindi are also spoken by a number of people in the state.

In Big towns, English is used in writing and conversation. Goa being a major tourist spot gives a tourist-friendly way of interaction through English. Portuguese was the language of the colonial rulers and the official language until before liberation, in 1961. Thus just after the departure of the Portuguese, the Portuguese language lost all its favor and usage. Konkani and Marathi survived in Goa by secret studies at home, in temples and public places in villages.

Goan Folk Dances traditions - Bhandap is a traditional folk dance performed by the womenfolk of the scheduled tribe community who were the original settlers of Goa, in the second half of the Hindu month Bhadrapada.

Corredinho-Portuguese Folk Dance is a peasant dance which is accepted among Goan fortunate youth. Dekhm-Beauty dance is performed only by women, displays an excellent mix of Indian & Western rhythms.

Dhangar Dance is worship dance performed on the navratri days.

Fugdi & Dhalo is a popular Folk dance performed by women and is considered to be the most common folk dance forms in Goa.

Goff-folk Dance is way of expressing joy and happiness of Goa peasants after the harvest, dining Shigmo Festival in Phalgun month. Nanpet-Sword Dance is a traditional warrior dance performed during the Shigmo Festival mostly by the men.
